We’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of Gelatiamo! Founded by Maria Coassin in the heart of downtown Seattle, Gelatiamo is the art of perfect gelato and Italian pastries. Each of our recipes is skillfully developed by Maria following authentic Italian traditions, and inspired by her love of Seattle. Throughout this year we’ll feature stories, people, partners and milestones that have been a significant part of our history. Come enjoy gelato with us!

IMG_2694Notoriously difficult to create, yet a staple for summertimes from Italy to Seattle, lemon sorbet is a perfect combination of tartness and sweetness, creamy and cool. The recipe also happens to be one of founder Maria Coassin’s favorites since childhood and one she perfected through her years of schooling in the art of gelato. Fresh lemons from the market, sweet sugar and water combine to be a refreshing treat.

Although the flavor is exceptional on its own, we suggest these pairings with a pint at home or on your next visit:

Seemingly disparate but complimentary when paired, the tartness of the lemon sorbet is perfectly balanced by the richness of the chocolate gelato.

IMG_2403Sgroppino

Often served as a palate cleanser, a dessert or pre-dinner drink, sgroppino is an Italian cocktail known for its ability to “un-knot” the stomach (surely to make room for more food). It originated in the Veneto region of Italy (which i
s Maria’s neighboring region and the land of Prosecco).

There are many versions of this drink (i.e. adding milk, limoncello liquor or using an entirely different type of fruit) but we’re only including our favorite, which just happens to be the original and the most simple.

Sgroppino Recipe (makes 6 drinks, 4-5 oz servings)

1 pint Gelatiamo lemon sorbet

4 oz. prosecco, chilled

2 oz. vodka, chilled

Blend the lemon sorbet to soften then combine vodka and prosecco and slowly add to the blended mixture. Serve immediately in chilled glasses.

Ecco fatto, salute! – Enjoy!
