We’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of Gelatiamo! Founded by Maria Coassin in the heart of downtown Seattle, Gelatiamo is the art of perfect gelato and Italian pastries. Each of our recipes is skillfully developed by Maria following authentic Italian traditions, and inspired by her love of Seattle. Throughout this year we’ll feature stories, people, partners and milestones that have been a significant part of our history. Come, enjoy gelato with us!
Cherry and peach season is in full swing at Gelatiamo and this summer’s gelato recipes are just a little bit sweeter. This year we’re partnering with Tonnemaker Farms and Stewardship Partners to source local cherries and peaches that are certified Salmon-Safe.
These partnerships continue a 20 year tradition of sourcing fresh, natural and local ingredients for our gelato and pastries. A commitment made by founder, Maria Coassin, when she opened Gelatiamo in 1996. “It’s important to me, our environment and local economy. For several years, we’ve sourced the milk used in every Gelatiamo recipe from Fresh Breeze Organics, which is also certified Salmon-Safe. Adding Tonnemaker Farms helps us make even more of a difference. We’re choosing partners who are invested in our broader eco-system,” she explains.
Tonnemaker Farms seasonal peaches and cherries will be used in several gelato recipes available at Gelatiamo and its distributors in July and August:
Cherry sorbet
Cherries & Cream
Cherry Compote Chocolate Chip
Bellini (Peaches & Prosecco) Sorbet
Peach Sorbet
Peaches & Cream
Tonnemaker Farms and Fresh Breeze Organic are certified under the independent Salmon-Safe eco-label. Managed in Washington by Stewardship Partners, Salmon-Safe works with farmers protecting water quality and restoring wild salmon habitat throughout the Pacific Northwest. Buying Salmon-Safe helps sustain healthy watersheds for people, fish and wildlife.
About Fresh Breeze Dairy
The Langley family has been farming “generationally,” in Lynden since 1901. Working hard to keep the land healthy for the family was simply what they did. Twelve years ago, they decided to turn the tragedy of a barn fire into an opportunity to farm their values. First by going organic as Fresh Breeze Organic Dairy and then, eight years ago, getting certified Salmon-Safe. “We care about the fish that spawn in the creek on our property, Bertrand Creek. It makes sense for us because caring for the land is what we’ve always done and Salmon-Safe practices like conserving soil and water, avoiding chemicals and promoting biodiversity help us make good milk,” says dairy owner, Clarissa Langley. Good milk is our life’s work and our passion.
About Tonnemaker Farms
For Tonnemaker Farms, having their fruits and vegetables certified Salmon-Safe last year went hand-in-hand with the family ethos. The Tonnemakers settled along the Yakima River over 100 years ago. The Basque side of the family settled along the Salmon River in Idaho in the late 1800’s. “We can remember the awe-inspiring salmon runs of our youth. A guiding principle in our farming operations is to care for the land in such a way as to leave it, for the next generation, at least as fertile as when our ancestors left it to us,” explains Kole Tonnemaker. “ We are always mindful that our generation doesn’t really own the land but instead has borrowed it from our children and grandchildren.. Therefore, rather than exploit these resources, we must find ways to provide for the needs of our generation without exhausting or degrading the resources upon which future generations will rely.”
