If you’re a frequent visitor to our space on Third and Union you’ve by now seen our new decor – minimalist interior, crisp white cases and photographs of our history and origins. Because the interior refresh was a project of inspiration for owner Maria Coassin, we want to give a brief back story about the changes, and a shout out to those who made it happen.
Other than a few minor paint touchups and adjustments to decor, Gelatiamo has had the same interior since our opening in 1996. Throughout the years Maria’s focus has been on providing exceptional service and delicious recipes to her customers. And though she felt the interior never perfectly matched her taste or personality, the product and the experience were where she chose to invest. Last year, the opportunity to update the store appeared in the form of a need for new product cases.
Once Maria started shopping for new cases, she began to critically review Gelatiamo’s retail space. Maria explains, “It’s like walking into a clothing store looking to buy new pants. You get the pants, and then suddenly realize you need a whole new wardrobe to go with your new pants.” With the realization that it might be time to do a complete renovation, Maria began the search for an architect that could give our space a more modern look but also feel warm and inviting.
Maria found a partnership with Floisand Studio Architecture, a local Seattle firm known for recent projects with Pagliacci and Macrina Bakery. Maria recalls, “One of the first things the team suggested was painting the dining walls black. This really took me by surprise, but I took a leap of faith and trusted their judgement. After seeing the results, I’m so happy I did.”
The physical renovation began in April 2015 and, though it lasted about one month, the store was only closed for 10 days! The end result is a space that not only looks bigger and more open but also showcases our beautiful and colorful products, making them the focal
point. “Painting the dining walls black was a brilliant idea. It allows the white cases to pop. This contrast makes the space more about our products, which is why our customers come here in the first place. The minimal colors create the perfect backdrop for the bustling city just outside our windows,” explains Maria.
The store’s aesthetic now truly represents Maria’s personality and taste and most importantly draws our customers eyes to the products they came to purchase. We invite you to visit our beautiful space on Third and Union Streets in Downtown Seattle to see it for yourself.
